Gunboat 68 Convexity at the Transpac – Built for This.

Some boats are designed to cruise. Others are engineered to perform. Convexity, Gunboat 6806, was built to do both, and race the Transpac.
From the start, her mission was clear: keep the Gunboat 68’s bluewater versatility while optimizing her for downwind ocean racing. The design brief from 2021 led to a series of smart, targeted upgrades: a one-meter extension to the rig, boom, and longeron; a fully revised reefing and locking system; and weight-saving refinements using higher modulus carbon and Nomex. New rudders and reworked daggerboards rounded out a package that delivered a decisive gain - 2 knots faster downwind and half a knot upwind versus the standard Regatta setup.
A Race that Marked a Milestone
After proving herself on the inshore circuits of the Med and Caribbean, Convexity crossed through the Panama Canal and prepped for the ultimate test: the Transpacific Yacht Race, from Los Angeles to Hawaii.
Despite falling into a windles high-pressure zone mid-race, the crew clawed their way back to take second in line honours, winning the Rudy Choy Perpetual Trophy (fastest multihull elapsed time) and the Waikiki Yacht Club’s Chalice (best in class on handicap).
The crew’s post-race stories said it all: stringing together surfs across Pacific swells, clocking consistent speeds over 20 knots, and sailing with balance and power in true Gunboat fashion.

A Legacy Remembered
Author’s sidenote: There is one person who was instrumental in all the performance and technical decisions on this project, the legendary ex skipper of ELVIS. Scotty Bradford was one of those beautifully passionate human beings. A gem of a man with endless experience. He always thought “out the box”. Tragically, Scotty lost his battle with cancer before he could see 68-06 fulfill its brief to race the Transpac. We definitely had him in our thoughts. You are missed my friend. — William Jelbert.
Convexity’s Transpac journey isn’t just a race result. It’s the manifestation of a vision, where performance, passion, and precision converge. From the drawing board to the finish line, she embodies what it means to push limits, chase wind, and do so with style and intent.
